Nestled in the heart of Sligo Town, Thomas Connolly Pub Sligo stands as a testament to Ireland’s rich pub heritage. With its origins dating back to 1780 and officially licensed in 1861, it’s recognised as Sligo’s oldest traditional pub. No doubt this Sligo staple has witnessed some things through its centuries of history, including visits from notable figures like Charles Stewart Parnell and even a stint as a wholesale grocer, wine & spirit company shop selling tea, sugar, and bottling whiskey. Sure with all of that, this may just be the best pub in Ireland.

Honestly the history here is insane and all of the stories couldn’t be told in a week of sittings. I have been lucky enough to bend the ear of owner Paul a few times. One of the stories is how the different society classes of Sligo would enter through different doors from different streets never to mix. Sorry Paul if you read this but I have forgotten so many others.
To be fair the walls are covered in history, so maybe go early throw your coat in a snug and explore the pictures and memorabilia before the crowds decent for their Irish Coffees.

Whiskey Wonderland that is the Thomas Connolly Pub Sligo
While its reputation for a perfect pint of Guinness is well-earned, Thomas Connolly also caters to diverse tastes. From craft beers and premium gins to specialty coffees, there’s something for everyone. The pub’s commitment to quality and variety ensures that every visitor finds their drink of choice.

For whiskey aficionados, Thomas Connolly is a paradise. Boasting an ever-growing collection of over 200 premium Irish whiskeys and scotches, the pub offers curated tasting trays and exclusive their own single cask releases. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious newcomer, the knowledgeable staff are eager to guide you through their impressive selection.
One night myself and (Redacted) business partner and best mate Micheal Cowman drank a whole bottle of Dunville’s Palo Cortado 10 Year Old only to see a fresh one there the next day- so this place is stocked to the hilt with fine fine booze best crack on!
If you fancy deep diving more into the world of whiskey the Thomas Connolly has the answer as it’s the home to the Sligo Whiskey Society. Founded and hosted by the pub since 2021, this vibrant community brings together whiskey lovers from across Sligo to explore rare releases, single malts, and innovative distillations through regular tastings and curated events.

Each month, the society hosts intimate and educational tasting nights featuring guest distillers, industry experts, and brand ambassadors from both well-known and up-and-coming labels. I did one here and honestly it was one of the best night’s craic I have had.
Traditional Live Irish Music
Beyond its spirits, the pub is renowned for its regualr live music sessions. From traditional Irish sessions to acoustic sets and contemporary folk, they host some of the best local and touring talent the west coast has to offer. With regular guest performances and spontaneous sessions by the fire, there’s always a tune to tap your foot to.
Whether you’re a seasoned music lover or simply seeking the authentic pub experience, an evening of live music at Thomas Connolly’s is pure Irish magic and not to be missed. It’s no wonder that Lonely Planet highlighted Thomas Connolly as one of the best pubs in Ireland for pints, music, and unforgettable experiences. I can confirm this message.

Check their website for their weekly schedule but you will usually strike gold most Fridays & Saturdays nights.
