Nestled within the wild beauty of the Bluestack Mountains in County Donegal, Biddy’s O’Barnes is more than just a pub, it’s an Irish institution (could it even be the Best pub in Donegal?). Located in the picturesque Barnesmore Gap, this historic inn has been welcoming travellers, locals, and adventurers for more than 150 years. Whether you’re on a scenic drive, tackling a hike, or just craving a creamy pint of Guinness in a place that feels like home, Biddy’s delivers.

I have stopped here half a dozen time on the travelling the Wild Atlantic Way from Galway to Derry. It is the perfect spot on that stretch of road and honestly any excuse to stop at such an iconic venue.

You shouldn’t miss it because we all have some form of maps on our phone but if you see the sign “Have a Snack Biddy’s Famous Pub” you are there. Stop.

Inside Biddy’s Donegal

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by wooden stools, exposed stone floors, vintage décor, and a fireplace that makes you want to stay all day. The mix of dark wood and soft light creates the kind of cosy ambiance that makes strangers feel like regulars. Plates, mugs, and memorabilia adorn the shelves in a way that’s both nostalgic and uniquely Irish.

In saying this…this place is huge. They have a great outdoor area, conservatory type with seating as well as two large rooms that can be used for bigger groups. I usually eat in the main bar area because I like the traditional vibe. I have always found it busy or that feeling that it’s just about to be busy. Once I arrived and there was a First Holy Communion about to kick off another was 24 guests in for pre-wedding drinks and you are sure to hear someone say this is the best pub in Donegal (I bet a pint on it).

Whatever the day/night or occasion I found the staff rapid and great craic!

The Food at Biddy’s O’Barnes

Expect traditional Irish fare done right.

I always get the same. Creature of habit I think, but I have seen loads of other dishes go out and they all look great. Their lunch menu hits all the comfort notes and the Irish classic and my all time favourite pub lunch order: Soup and a Sandwich. A ham and cheese sandwich (toasted but not a toastie), creamy bowl of potato and leek soup, a random lump of salad stuff with some kettle-cooked crisps. Simple, satisfying, and soul-warming. Also a peppermint tea, which usually gets an eye roll from the guests I’m with.

You’ll also find daily specials, and the kitchen elevates the rustic menu making sure you leave fully satisfied. Sure dive in to whatever you fancy I’m sure it’ll be grand.

Outside

The view from Biddy’s O Barnes is as much a draw as the food. Surrounded by rolling green hills and the tranquil Barnesmore Gap, it’s the kind of stop that feels like a deep breath. Sit outside with your drink and soak it all in this is central County Donegal at its best.

Something worth noting is the great parking too. Honestly this is a god send when parking a mini bus or coach, or even just knowing you have a place to pull in safely not worrying about getting a parking ticket or any of that BS! Oh and picnic tables too but honestly see the bit above about the food…
