Most places in Dublin throw the word tapas around like it means flavour. Very few actually hit the mark. Bar Pez does quietly, confidently, and with seafood at its heart. A wine list worth attention doesn’t hurt either.

Why We Went

Golden letters of bar pez tapas in dublin

We were chasing a serious small plates experience, one that wasn’t another playlist-friendly brunch spot or overpriced “tapas” slider. Bar Pez came with pedigree (Fish Shop – which I love and Beach House family), and we wanted to see if that translated into real Spanish style food confidence.

About Bar Pez in Dublin

Bar Pez literally means Fish Bar in Spanish, which tells you most of what you need to know.

Labelled by many as the best tapas in Dublin and always highly recommended, expectations were set. And while Dublin is awash with small plates and shite wine, what it actually needs are restaurants with clarity, confidence, and zero fear in execution.

Could Bar Pez be one of those places?

Where Is Bar Pez in Dublin?

Bar Pez is settled quietly on the edge of the city. The space is relaxed, unfussy, and grown-up, wooden tables, tiled floors, good light. You’re here to eat, drink well and have good conversation.

Booking is straightforward online, but it’s a small room and fills quickly, so book ahead if you’re planning to go. One minor gripe: my reservation sat outside their advertised Google opening times. A small fix, but one that would’ve saved a flurry of last-minute, unanswered phone calls on my end.

Bar Pez is very much a come-as-you-are restaurant. Solo diners fit in. Groups fit in. Food people definitely fit in.

The Bar Pez Menu

Best Taps in Dublin. Menu at Bar Pez

The menu is split cleanly: pintxos, tapas, and larger raciones.

The menu was clearly explained with the helpful “we recommend X per person” advice. It’s the right way to do it snack first, commit later.

Another slightly negative point: I ordered a handful of pintxos and tapas to pretty much try as many as I could without filling up and was told that I had to also order my ranciones (or mains) now at the same time as they have a small kitchen and cannot accept ranciones requests when they get busy. Honestly this shocked me, so I didn’t order any and I don’t feel I missed out.

Gildas at Bar Pez in Dublin

What We Ordered

Pintxos. Pintxos. They are worth ordering twice, which I did (or should I say I was allowed to) with the Gildas: briny, punchy, and exactly what they should be. No reinvention needed, just good quality ingredients each stage of the pick. They set the tone immediately.

  • Sesame Scallop toast – crisp, golden, nutty, deeply moreish. It was very tasty but I would give this one a miss if here again.
  • Anchovy toast – salty, sharp, perfectly balanced with creamy richness and acidity.

Everything is tight. No wasted garnish. No unnecessary cleverness. High impact flavours.

Bar Pez understands seafood which is no shock with The Fish Shop in the same family.

Tuna Crudo

Fresh, clean, expertly sliced. Lifted with acidity and fat in all the right places. Nothing masked, nothing overworked. This is confidence on a plate.

Oysters

Cold, pristine, and treated with respect. Served simply, letting the produce do the talking. If oysters are on, order them. If they’re not, ask why.

The Crab Sandwich: Don’t Skip It

Let’s be clear, the crab sandwich is mandatory. If you have done an Instagram dive into what people order here you will see this pop up the most and for good reason.

Crab Sandwich at Bar Pez in Dublin

Sweet crab meat, dressed just enough, stuffed into deeply toasted crunchy bread that’s crisp on the outside and indulgently soft within. It’s rich, it’s slightly messy, and it’s a tastie tangy seafood bite or two. This alone justifies the visit.

Vegetable dishes here aren’t filler they’re thought through.

Pumpkin Salad at Bar Pez

The pumpkin salad brings sweetness, texture, and acidity into balance, while richer dishes are offset by freshness. It’s smart menu construction and shows a kitchen that understands pacing. This may have been my favourite dish from the whole menu for pure flavour brightness and balance

Wine

Spanish wine list in Dublin's Bar Pez

The wine list leans natural, Spanish, and interesting without being intimidating. Staff actually know what’s in the bottle and won’t upsell nonsense. You tell them what you’re eating or what you enjoy they’ll sort the rest.

Each wine was perfectly paired to what I was eating and elevated the whole exereince.
