There are some coffees that don’t just taste good they light you up. I hope this is one of those.
Blue Cup Roastery’s Ethiopia Yirgacheffe: a wild, juicy, high-energy brew that brings everything I love about African coffee roaring to the surface.

If you’re into blueberries bursting on your palate, apricot riding shotgun, and a honeysuckle hug on the finish this one’s going to make your morning (or afternoon).

I got this from their coffee shop window, drive through, roaster in a shipping container while spending Christmas in Wilmington North Carolina. And yes I did just choose the bag because of the big lazy lion on the front.

First Impressions of Blue Cup Roastery

As the first few drops bloomed into the Chemex, it was obvious this was no ordinary cup. A heady, floral sweetness floated into the air, like a basket of fresh apricots and blueberries left in the sun. There was a sharper top note too — almost like ripe jackfruit, tropical and bright. Even before tasting, this Ethiopia Yirgacheffe announced itself with all the hallmarks of a high-grown, fully natural processed African coffee: fruity, juicy, and vividly alive.

The beans themselves had a dusty matte finish, not overly oily, and smelled unmistakably fresh. It set the stage for an incredibly inviting cup.

Brew Method

For this tasting, I brewed the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe using a Chemex with bleached filters to highlight clarity. Brew ratio was 1:16, water temp at 94°C, with a steady spiral pour after a 40-second bloom. Brew time came in around 3:30 minutes, aiming for a clean, juicy extraction.

Taste Profile

First sip out of my Lost & Found glass mug, and it’s like being dropped into a tropical orchard. The blueberry jumps out immediately, fresh and sweet, but balanced by the more syrupy richness of ripe apricot and the exotic kick of jackfruit.

Mid-palate, the cup softens into a luscious honeysuckle note, offering a delicate floral sweetness. The texture is juicy, round, and a litte heavy but layered with flavor.

There’s a crisp, clean acidity running through the cup too, a little like biting into a perfectly ripe white peach or sipping on a light white wine. It’s balanced, sparkling, and refreshing.

About the Coffee

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe refers to coffee grown in the Yirgacheffe district, which is part of the Gedeo Zone in southern Ethiopia.

  • Altitude: 1,700 to 2,200 meters above sea level
  • Center town: Yirgacheffe town (small, but world-famous among coffee lovers)

Yirgacheffe is famous because of its ideal climate (cool temperatures, high elevations, consistent rainfall) and its lush, fertile soil, perfect for slow-growing, sweet, and floral coffees.
This area produces some of the most celebrated washed and natural coffees in the world often packed with bright citrus, floral, and stone fruit notes.

Located in Wilmington’s creative Cargo District, Blue Cup Roastery is a small-batch coffee shop and roaster with a big heart for quality and community. Operating out of a converted shipping container “the only one of its kind in the city” — strange brag but sure. They roast all their coffee in-house, carefully sourcing beans that showcase vibrant, true-to-origin flavours. Their focus is simple: great coffee, freshly roasted, served in a welcoming space that feels more like a local hangout than a café…or a drive through shipping container lads.

Final Thoughts

This Ethiopia Yirgacheffe from Blue Cup Roastery is sunshine in a cup. It’s the kind of coffee that makes you smile halfway through the first sip. Bursting with fruity juiciness and wrapped in delicate florals, it’s a beautiful example of what high-quality African coffee can taste like. For the price and what I am coming to know about Ethiopian coffee this is a strong example and glad I bought it.
