If you think all whiskey tastes the same, High Wire Distilling Co. will change your mind and probably raise your standards while they’re at it.
Founded by Scott Blackwell and Ann Marshall, High Wire isn’t your average small-batch operation. It’s a distillery with soul built on Southern heirloom grains, deep farming roots, and a relentless focus on doing things the right way, not the fast way.
Inside Charleston’s Best Craft Distillery
Tucked on Huger Street, just off Upper King, High Wire feels both industrial and intentional. The space itself is stunning exposed beams, polished concrete, massive copper stills, and the unmistakable scent of grain being transformed into something strong and beautiful.
I stopped in during Charleston Wine + Food as this was the hospitality hub. Meaning everyday I could grab free coffee and maybe some whiskey. On day one I had some time so I asked for a tour and I am glad I did!

Most distilleries source grain from wherever’s cheapest. High Wire? They partner with Southern farmers to revive near-extinct grains like Jimmy Red corn a vibrant, high-oil variety that’s been nearly lost to time. Yeah they literary brought a corn back from the dead to make whiskey with.
They mill, mash, ferment, distill, and age everything in-house. No shortcuts. No contract sourcing. Just deeply expressive, grain-forward spirits that taste like where they came from.
High Wire. Not Just Whiskey — A Whole Experience
High Wire isn’t just one of the top distilleries in Charleston—it’s also one of the most educational. You can:
- Take a distillery tour (highly recommend)
- Sip through a guided tasting flight – ask for some of their experimental stuff.
- Pick up a bottle of something you won’t find on any retail shelf
From their flagship Jimmy Red Bourbon to experimental blends, gin, and amaro, there’s a lot more range here than you’d expect.
