Today, we’re diving into Velvet Cap Irish Whiskey, a five-year-old single malt from Blackwater Distillery, aged entirely in Bordeaux wine casks. That’s right, this isn’t one of those quick wine finishes; this whiskey has been living and breathing in Bordeaux casks from the get-go, soaking up all that red wine goodness.
The Story Behind Velvet Cap
First, a quick nod to the name: Velvet Cap refers to the velvet caps worn by jockeys. I’ll be honest I’m not a horse racing expert, but I do know a thing or two about whiskey, and this one has an origin story rooted in Waterford, where Blackwater Distillery makes some of Ireland’s most interesting spirits. While this whiskey isn’t distilled at Blackwater, they’ve certainly put their own stamp on it, adding to an impressive lineup that includes their Dirt Grain whiskey and some seriously good gins. If you’re in Ballyduff, give the distillery a visit (note to self: I still need to go).
Now, let’s get to the good stuff.
Rate That Pop:
Before diving into the tasting, we had to rate that all-important bottle pop. Have a wee look and listen for yourself here:
The Pour: First Impressions
The bottle comes in a sleek, “disco tube”, with an eye-catching label that screams class. Pouring it out, the whiskey shows off a beautiful deep amber, almost like mahogany in a glass. At 40% ABV, it’s on the lighter side, but trust me, it doesn’t skimp on flavour.

On the Nose: A Red Berry Dream
Right away, the aroma hits you with a wave of red currants and ripe red berries. There’s a rich, unmistakable Bordeaux influence that sets it apart from whiskeys finished in fortified wine casks. It’s fruity and lush, with subtle undertones of toasted oak and a hint of vanilla. It’s like the whiskey equivalent of a berry tart on a warm day.
The Palate: Milk Chocolate & Gingerbread Spice
First sip, and bam! Milk chocolate coats your mouth. It’s smooth, silky, and incredibly well-rounded for a 40% ABV whiskey. As it develops, you get a pleasant transformation into gingerbread spice and a touch of orange peel. The Bordeaux influence comes through again, bringing along dried fruits, a bit of trail mix, and a whisper of nuttiness.
Imagine nibbling on chocolate-covered nuts with a handful of dried fruit. There’s a biscuity, malted note that shows up right at the end, like the final act of a well-rehearsed play. And really, who doesn’t love a good biscuity finish?
The Finish: Long and Satisfying
The finish is impressively long for a whiskey of this proof. The biscuity malt lingers, paired with a slight red berry tartness that keeps you coming back for more. It’s approachable yet sophisticated, with just enough complexity to keep your palate entertained.
The Verdict on Velvet Cap:

Score: “Aye, It’s Grand” (6.9/10)
Velvet Cap Irish Whiskey falls comfortably into the “Aye, It’s Grand” category. It’s a smooth, well-balanced pour that’s perfect for anyone looking for an approachable yet interesting single malt. The Bordeaux cask influence shines, giving it a unique fruity character without overpowering the base spirit. While it’s not a mind-blower, it’s definitely a crowd-pleaser and would make a great addition to any whiskey lover’s shelf.
So, if you fancy a whiskey that’s rich, flavourful, and a bit of craic, Velvet Cap has got you covered. Just don’t try drinking it while on horseback you might end up like me, more suited to a donkey than a racehorse.
