When you’re just starting out with whisky, the questions come thick and fast: What’s single malt vs blended? Why does cask strength matter? Do I have to drink it neat? It’s not a dense encyclopedia. Instead, it’s a structured, modern guide that helps you build a proper foundation. With that is could definitely be the best whisky book for those just starting the journey into whisky.
Think of it as a Whisky 101 book.
About the Author: Who is Nick Morgan?
Dr Nick Morgan’s whisky career started in academia. In 1990, he swapped teaching Scottish history at the University of Glasgow for building an archive at United Distillers- modern day Diageo. Once the archive was up and running, Morgan moved into marketing, where he spent the next 30 years researching Diageo’s brands and developing campaigns and whiskies informed by that history.

Before retiring, he turned his attention to Johnnie Walker, digging deep into the brand’s story and publishing A Long Stride: The Story of the World’s No.1 Scotch Whisky in 2020 (which is a fantastic book for Johnnie Walker fans).
That mix of historian, archivist, marketer, and writer gives Morgan a rare perspective. He knows the myths, the marketing spin, and the reality behind whisky better than almost anyone and he writes with clarity, balance, and zero snobbery.

- Approachable: Perfect for readers who are curious but not yet deep in the whisky weeds.
Style & Structure
- Clean & Modern: The layout is crisp and easy to follow.
- Readable: Morgan writes with authority, but always in plain English.
- Organized: Each chapter builds logically from whisky history to how it’s made, to how you can enjoy it best.

This isn’t just a reference, it’s a book you can actually read cover to cover without yawning. Although it is clearly laid out to be a reference book also.

Whiskey4Breakfast Take
Essentially Everything You Need to Know About Whisky (but are too afraid to ask) is an exploration of the whisky world, penned by industry veteran Dr Nick Morgan in partnership with The Whisky Exchange. It lifts the lid on whisky’s history, culture, and the people behind the spirit- all the things whisky fans are already curious about but don’t always get straight answers to. It’s a book written by someone who has dedicated his career to whisky, for anyone who simply wants to enjoy it more.

This book is crisp, clean, and a brilliant way to structure your learning. I’ve actually gifted my copy to a couple of friends who wanted to expand their whisky knowledge because it gives them the foundational building blocks without overwhelming them.
It’s also a stunning book to look at. The artwork and page layout are modern, sharp, and stylish the kind of book you can leave out and people will pick up (and maybe steal a few pages of knowledge before their next dram).
