Outside McGann's Pub in Doolin

McGann’s Pub is definitely part of my Doolin pub crawl and usually after I have had some seafood returning from a trip out to the Aran Islands and fancy a little bit extra craic.

I see this as part of the Doolin Pub Trinity, so honestly you can’t really go wrong. The other pubs are Gus’s and McDermotts.

About McGann’s Pub

Step inside and you’ll think you’ve wandered into someone’s gaff, if that someone happened to be a retired Irish traditional singer with a love of stout memorabilia, whiskey, and really good eclectic clutter.

Founded in 1975 by brothers Tommy and Tony McGann, two lads who returned from the States with a dream and a load of Irish grit this spot is still run with heart by the next generation, Sheila and Dermot and it shows.

There’s no slick, manufactured pub experience here. McGann’s is a place where pints are poured slowly, tables are swifty cleared and seats are quickly filled, paired with the sound of conversations and trad tunes.

Walls of History…ish

Every inch of wall space is spoken for with vintage enamel signs, old black-and-white photos, and framed memories layered like tree rings. You’ve got Clarke’s Plug tin ads beside family portraits, mustard signs near a flat-screen TV no one really looks at. It’s classic authentic interior Irish pub design at its coziest.

The bar itself seems far too small to do such a mighty venue but the taps are locked and stocked with a backdrop of fairy lights, teddy bears, St. Bridget Crosses, medals, and mugs it’s part altar, part family shrine and it all works.

Inside / Outside / Flowering Arch

The spaces within McGann’s Pub have something for everyone, the dark wood classic styl setting, trad music in one corner with tables eating stew in the other. Then around the corner you’ll find yourself staring at a green-painted dresser stacked with floral china, gold-rimmed teacups, and ceramic dolls. You don’t get that in Temple Bar.

A rare corner of tables are dressed in wipe-clean floral plastic covers sitting under a camping and hot showers sign (possibly harking back to a time when Doolin was still new to the tourism bug, which it now has fully caught and the place has plenty of indoor spots to stay). With the side door giving way to the inviting light to the outdoor area.

When the sun graces Doolin, McGann’s backyard is where to be. Wooden picnic tables scattered across green grass, flowering arches, and even a Buddha tucked under the hedgerow. There is also a nice covered area too – this place looks like it could hold a fair few flow, so no doubt it is a party when in full flow. You can sense the hours that slip by here especially with a pint in hand and no place else to be.

The Food at McGann’s Pub

Bar Menu in Irish Pub in Doolin

They do open for Breakfast and lunch but it seems Tony’s Famous Beef Stew is the stuff of local legend and what you’ll see on most tables. The chalkboard menu offers rotating modern hits like pan-fried salmon with butter sauce or potato and onion bhajis with mint.

Pint of Guinness and Packet of Cheese and Onion Tayto Crisps

But to be honest? I have never eaten here, for me this is one of those places where a packet of cheese & onion Tayto and a pint of Guinness is all I need. The perfect pairing.

The Guinness is spot-on: creamy, poured with care, and served surging to the top.

Tunes in the Timber

It’s no secret that the beating heart of Doolin is Irish traditional music which has lived and breathed in McGann’s for decades, slipping out from fiddles and flutes and settling into the wood grain of the walls. Most nights, you’ll find world-class musicians tucked into a corner, drawing locals and visitors into that familiar foot-tapping trance.

There’s no pretence here, just pure music and pints. Definitely worth checking their outside chalk board for their set times.

Final Thoughts

Inside McGanns Pub in Doolin

McGann’s isn’t just a pub. It’s a patchwork of lived-in charm, poured fresh daily with Guinness and a side of stew. I would suggest going there to sit for a bit, soak up the history on the walls, the music in the air and who knows where your day or night might take you.

Sure, not having a plan and sitting in a great pub, sounds like a great plan to me.
