If you’re in or around North Donegal , make sure you carve out time for a pint (or three) in McClean’s Bar Malin Town Donegal. This roadside pub was established in 1955 and this is one of those unique pubs that perfectly captures what makes Donegal so special: great Guinness (or the Best Guinness in Donegal?), petrol pumps, a warm welcome, and an atmosphere that instantly feels like a tug of war between their past and the future of pubs in modern Ireland.
The Vibe
McClean’s Bar is family-run, proud of its roots, and buzzing with community spirit. You’ll find everything from local trad sessions and singalongs to sports on the telly and conversations by the stove. Whether you’re a tourist in town for the views or a regular back from the oyster feilds, you’ll be greeted the same — with a nod, a drink, and maybe a bit of cheek.

The interiors are proper old-school Irish: dark wood, snug corners, and the type of bar where stories and racing tips have been traded for decades. It’s also been a spot for many charity events, community fundraisers, and local celebrations, highlighting a true hub for Irish village life.
I once went with my now-wife to celebrate a birthday. Our Airbnb was a few miles out the road, so we decided to walk into Malin Town — winding our way along the coast, through the oyster fields, and stopping by a little stone bridge where the pub instantly reveals itself, marked by old-school petrol pumps that feel like a postcard from the past. We sat by the old fireplace and ordered one pint… but stayed for a few too many.

By the time we left, the sun was setting, we smelt the chips from the local chippy and drifted towards it and ordered our dinner. It was chilly and no taxi in sight, so we started walking back but then got ready to get into the chips and we ended up hitching a lift the last few miles with a local man who gave us the best backroads tour of the area. One of those nights that lives long in the memory.

What to Expect at McClean’s Bar Malin Town Donegal
- Top-notch Guinness and Irish whiskey behind the bar – Best Guinness in Donegal?
- Live trad music sessions (check their Facebook for dates)
- Regular fundraising events and raffles supporting local causes
- Old-school bar snacks and the kind of warm welcome you wish every pub had ( I do think someone dropped a plate of chicken goujons at our table too at one point from a birthday happening somewhere in the pub).
Definitely an eclectic spot indeed but great craic nonetheless and a great place for the local community
