Why We Went to The Black Pig Kinsale

After a week camping our way around West Cork, our final night landed in Kinsale. We wanted something relaxed but properly good: great food, great wine in a beautiful setting. The Black Pig had come up too many times to ignore.

I made the classic mistake of thinking we could wing it. We arrived just as they opened and joined a queue of about fifteen people. They found space for us at the bar counter which honestly, one of the best seats in the house- but within half an hour the queue was still growing and most of the tables were already gone. Lesson learned: book ahead. If you do, they chalk your name on the wall behind your seat, a small detail that adds to the wonderful aesthetic of the place.

The Room & First Impressions

Best Restaurant in Kinsale?

Set inside an 18th-century coach house, The Black Pig has a real sense of place and honestly, it might be one of my favourite rooms to dine in anywhere in Ireland. It’s stylish and considered without ever feeling forced. Everything fits. Nothing feels like it’s trying too hard and they have been doing it since 2013 and still going strong.

Think an Irish school (or coach) house mixed with a trendy Spanish bodega: dark tones, warm wood, candlelight, slate walls, and shelves stacked with books and bottles that look like they’ve been opened for the right reasons.

Out back, there’s a cobblestoned garden under the stars the kind of space where one glass quietly turns into five. Out here reminded me of dining in Mexico City, with it’s leafy green plants and tall ferns.

Over-all think nice Irish The room is intimate without feeling tight, buzzy without ever getting loud. It works just as well solo at the bar as it does with friends around a table. Add in staff who are warm, switched on, and quietly professional, and the whole place just hums.

The Menu at The Black Pig Kinsale

Small plates, top-tier produce, and no filler. You build your own meal, a few snacks, some seafood, maybe cheese, maybe dessert, always wine and a bit more wine.

The menu shift monthly with nightly specials but the focus stays the same: quality ingredients – you can read about their list of producers and suppliers too which is always a nice touch.

Their dessert menus is short but considered with perfect dessert wine pairings as well.

What We Ate

Marinated Anchovies
Clean, bright, dressed with restraint. Salty, citrusy, moreish.

Roaring Water Bay Oysters on Ice
Cold, briny, pristine. Served simply, because they don’t need help. Exactly how oysters in Kinsale should taste.

Organic Garryhinch Mushrooms on Toast
Shaved aged parmesan, tarragon cream and lots of fresh farm leaves.

Also an amazing broccoli dish – perhaps it was a special but it was excellent – ask if they can do it, well worth it!

Crème Brûlée
Cracking through caramel is always a crowd pleaser.

Black Pig Grand Marnier & Orange Chocolate Truffles
These were show stopping… we got one round then another (and another glass or two of wine)

Perfect!

Wine, Drinks & Pairings

This is where The Black Pig Kinsale really flexes.

Wine is clearly taken seriously here. There are over 250 bottles on the list, more than 100 by the glass, with a strong focus on organic, biodynamic, and natural wines. The wine list is deep but thoughtful bottles that make sense with food, prices that don’t punish curiosity, and staff who actually listen before recommending.

A wine standout was Or Blanc from Savoie by Fabien Trosset, Alpine freshness, clean acidity, and just enough texture to keep things interesting. It’s bright without being sharp, mineral without being austere.

This is food wine in the best sense. It sat comfortably alongside shellfish, vegetables, and lighter plates, never stealing focus but quietly lifting everything on the table. A great suggestion from the team.

Whether it’s a crisp white with seafood or something darker to stretch the evening, wine here feels like part of the conversation, all helped by the informed and professional staff.
