If there’s one stop you must make while exploring Ireland’s legendary Ring of Kerry, it’s The Red Fox Inn. Sitting proudly just outside of Killarney along the N70 between Killorglin and Glenbeigh, this charming pub isn’t just known locally – it’s world-famous for its perfectly poured Irish Coffees.

Whether you’re a tour bus traveler, a couple on a road trip, or a local popping in for a drink, The Red Fox offers a taste of Irish tradition in every sense.
A Warm Welcome

From the moment you spot the playful red fox sign out front, you know you’re in for something special. The bright red doors open to a cosy, old-world interior, complete with dark wooden furniture, horse-themed artwork, and stained-glass windows that transport you straight back in time.

The pub has an authentic rural décor with old radios, vintage ceramics, and farming memorabilia but this place can get super super busy and the two large car parks can fill up very quickly but there’s always space, and the friendly staff are quick with a smile, whether you’re ordering at the bar or inside the bog village.

Note on parking and crowds. Yes this place is a number one stop for most people on the Ring of Kerry but if you arrive and it looks rammed, park up and give it 5 minutes because tour buses are always moving on. But make no mistake this is a busy tourist place, gift shop and all!
The World-Famous Irish Coffee
The star of the show? Without a doubt, the Irish Coffee.

Prepared with precision, these iconic drinks come with a rich whiskey kick, smooth coffee base, and perfectly floated cream on top poured at mass from cracy jugs. Watching a tray of golden Irish whiskey glasses lined up and ready for mixing is a thing of beauty and the first sip is pure heaven.
It’s strong, smooth, and sweet in all the right ways – exactly what you want on a misty Kerry morning. Whiskey4Breakfast anyone?

Honestly, I’d argue it’s one of the best Irish Coffees in the whole country, and judging by the international visitors flocking here, I’m not the only one who thinks so.

The Red Fox Inn – A Step Back in Time
Right next door is the Kerry Bog Village, a fascinating open-air museum that lets you experience 19th-century rural Ireland. Wander through thatched cottages filled with antiques, listen to atmospheric sound effects of turf cutting, and see the tools our ancestors used to farm the land.

One of the highlights is meeting the Kerry Bog Pony, a breed once nearly extinct, and the majestic Irish Wolfhounds, one of the tallest dog breeds in the world. Combined with the colourful old gypsy caravans and rustic farm equipment, it’s an immersive slice of heritage that’s hard to find anywhere else in Europe.
This is Tadgh he is the best!

Meet the King of the Ring
Just a three-minute drive from The Red Fox Inn, you’ll find one of the Ring of Kerry’s most iconic characters the self-proclaimed King of the Ring. For over 30 years, he’s been sitting by the roadside crafting St. Brigid’s Crosses for passing travellers.

Armed with nothing but a bundle of fresh reeds he works quietly at his makeshift table. For a small donation (€5), you can take home one of his handcrafted crosses each one woven while you chat.
But the real magic? His two loyal companions: a gentle donkey and a golden-haired dog. The dog perches proudly on the donkey’s back, creating a surreal, heartwarming tableau that stops tourists in their tracks. It’s not a gimmick it’s just their life together.
This trio has become so famous that they even made National Geographic’s “Photo of the Day”, where photographer Max Malloy captured them perfectly, joking that the dog looked like it was barking instructions while the donkey checked the work.

If you’re road-tripping the Ring of Kerry, this is one of those authentic, only-in-Ireland moments you’ll remember long after your journey ends. Don’t just take the photo – stop for a chat, get your cross, and enjoy a slice of real Irish charm.
