The Mad Monk: From Tide to Table in Killarney

If there’s one place in Killarney that knows its way around a fish, it’s Quinlan’s The Mad Monk. Sitting on Plunkett Street, this is more than just a seafood restaurant it’s a fancy stylish seafood joint. The walls tell the story: bold murals of local fishermen hauling in their catch, colourful boats braving the Atlantic, and the sheer abundance of the waters off the South West coast.

Step inside and you’re greeted with deep green booths, warm lighting, and a steady buzz of conversation. It’s the kind of place where the clink of cutlery is matched by the occasional gasp when a platter of sizzling prawns lands at the next table. This spot showcases some of the best seafood in Killarney.

The Mad Monk’s Tide-to-Table Philosophy

This isn’t just a “fresh fish” claim on a menu, Quinlan’s own the boats, work with local fishermen, and deliver the day’s catch straight to their restaurants (they have 6 in total dotted around Cork and Kerry). By the time you’re tucking into your dinner, the fish may have been swimming off the coast less than 24 hours ago.

Their menu changes with the season and the day’s haul, which means you might see BBQ monkfish tail in summer, black sole on the bone in autumn, and steaming bowls of seafood chowder year-round. Chips are hand-cut daily, salads are crisp and plentiful, and there’s a genuine commitment to quality from the smallest prawn to the most indulgent crab claw.

My Visits to The Mad Monk

I’ve been to The Mad Monk three times now, and each visit has been its own adventure.

  • Visit One: The stuff of seafood dreams. Our last stop on cycling Malin to Mizen this place was a dream meal: oysters so fresh they tasted like a wave breaking on the shore, garlic prawns with sourdough that didn’t stand a chance of surviving the sauce.
  • Visit Two: Still very good. This time I went heavier on prawns and squid, with that signature sweet chilli jam. Portions? Generous. Flavours? Spot on. I still raved that it was the spot for seafood in Killarney.

  • Visit Three: A bit of a wobble – the oysters were on the dry side, and when I politely asked for fresh ones, I was assured they’d just been shucked. I wasn’t convinced, but it didn’t ruin the meal. The Portmagee crab claws, as always, pulled it back.

And that’s the thing – even when one element isn’t perfect, there’s enough here to keep me coming back.

The Space & Service

The Mad Monk has that sweet spot between casual and occasion dining. You can happily stroll in with windburned cheeks and jeans, or dress it up for a proper night out. The staff are quick, warm, and keep the place moving even on busy nights, though it’s wise to book ahead. Especially in the high season!

And sure you can also sit outside in the sunshine if it is a rare warm Irish night.

But sure if it is too full or not your vibe you can check out their other more chilled out restaurant (and maybe my favourite seafood in Killarney): Quinlan’s Seafood.
