If you like an Irish Pub this is the one for you in Killarney. Courtney’s Bar seems like it has never changed. Sometimes I will go in and it’ll be rammed full others it’s early and the whole space seems to be mine as hours melt away.

Don’t be fooled by the small narrow entrance, this place is mighty and has enough space for everyone. The bar staff are great too, always there for a chat and a bit of local history and to give you the heads up on which stout is pouring the best that day – this is key insider information.

Stuff like this all bundled together might just make this the Best Pub in Killarney.
About Courtney’s Pub in Killarney
Since 1891, Courtney’s Bar has stood tall on Main Street/Plunkett Street, Killarney’s social spine. Under family ownership the whole time, this bar isn’t just surviving it’s thriving, full of stories, tunes, and a fireside vibe you won’t find anywhere else.
When you walk inside it’s like you have left daylight of the modern world behind as you are greeted first with a stunning front bar with its protected classic façade to the rich, bare-wood interior, Courtney’s Pub feels like stepping into a 19th-century time capsule.

I love everything about it from the back room lit by fairy lights to the wooden floors that creak with every step; even the bog oak chandelier above the fire that hold secrets of pubs past.

Best Pub in Killarney?
Brian Murphy, the long-time steward of Courtney’s Pub curated over 60 Irish whiskies. The whiskey menu proudly covered the wall as taps line all sides of the bar

With Brian running tutored tastings for groups of six or more, this is as educational as it is enjoyable.

Live Irish Music
Live music runs through Courtney’s Pub like the seam of a well-worn coat. Wednesdays and Thursdays bring seasonal trad sessions, while Fridays offer contemporary sets year-round. Upstairs, more intimate gigs host up to 100 guests and you might’ve heard legends like Johnny Fean, John Spillane, David Gray, and others pass through. Ask anyone in town, and they’ll point you to the “reserved for musicians” sign and the snug spot where the next story is just beginning.

Final Thoughts

Courtney’s Pub isn’t just another out of the box Irish Pub. It’s a blueprint for lasting community. It balances a heritage feel with contemporary cleverness, offers whiskey & beer selections that would make a connoisseur feel at home, and stages live music that maintains Killarney’s legendary spirit. Oh—and yes, they’ve been pouring pints longer than most of the town’s phone lines have existed.
This id definitely one of my favourite bars in Killarney and could just be the Best Pub in Killarney.
You come for the history, stay for the whiskey and live music and you’ll leave claiming you’ve found Killarney’s beating heart.
