Some places you try once. Others you’re already planning your return to before the bill hits the table. Basic Kitchen is the second kind.
Tucked into a sunlit corner just off Broad Street, this is Charleston’s daytime dining at its best—fresh, vibrant, full of life. My wife and I popped in for a late brunch and ended up staying long enough to call it lunch. Between the food, the people, and the feel of the space, we were fully charmed.

More Than a Meal — It’s a Vibe
From the moment you walk in, Basic Kitchen just feels good. There’s natural light bouncing off green-tiled walls, woven pendant lights swaying slightly overhead, and fresh flowers at every table. The space is both airy and intimate—stylish without being self-conscious.
We were welcomed with a beet juice shot (don’t knock it, it works), and from there, the whole experience just flowed. We even had the chance to chat with Charlie, their Executive Chef, who brings serious heart to the menu, and Aneel, Beverage Director for Charleston Wine + Food, who knew we were in town and invited us out to lunch.
The Plates That Popped at Basic Kitchen
We went hard on the shared plates, and not a single bite disappointed.

Corn Ribs — roasted and smoky, with a creamy Alabama BBQ-style sauce. Total surprise hit.
Cauli Wings — crispy, tangy, and plant-based perfection. These hold their own against any real wings.
Pistachio Beet Dip — earthy, nutty, slightly sweet, and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Scooped up with cucumber slices and housemade chips.
For mains, we went for two standouts:
- The Basic Bowl — roasted sweet potato, kale, grains, chimichurri broccoli, and a fried egg with a yolk that could star in its own cooking show. It’s clean eating, Charleston-style.
- Daisy Bowl — chicken kofta, caraway cabbage, cucumber salad, and tomato tabbouleh over rice. Bold, punchy flavors with a creamy mint yogurt to cool it down.
And because we believe in balance: chocolate cake for dessert. Rich, not too sweet, and topped with a generous swipe of ganache. The kind of cake you “split” and then secretly want all to yourself.

Eat Well, Feel Good — for Real
Basic Kitchen isn’t just preaching wellness — they’re living it. The produce is local and seasonal, the wine list is organic and sustainable, and there’s an easy flow between health-conscious and indulgent. It’s the kind of place where you leave feeling lighter—not because you skipped the fries, but because everything was just right.
The team here cares. You can feel it in the service, the sourcing, and the energy in the room.
Final Word: Basic, but in the Best Way
If you’re looking for brunch, lunch, or low-key daytime bites in Charleston, Basic Kitchen hits every note. Whether you’re plant-based, pescatarian, or just hungry, this place delivers food that makes you feel good while tasting amazing.
And if you’re lucky? You might even leave with a restaurant rec straight from the chef himself.
