The Whistler Irish Whiskey and a tasting glass of whiskey

Whatโ€™s the story? This week weโ€™re whistling our way through The Whistler Double Oaked Small Batch Distillerโ€™s Select. Coming in at 40% ABV, this Irish whiskey has been double-matured in ex-Bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry butts, promising a balanced blend of sweet and nutty flavours. The Whistler Whiskey brand hails from the Boann Distillery in County Meath, where theyโ€™re crafting some fantastic whiskey though, truth be told, their own aged expressions are harder to find than a leprechaunโ€™s pot of gold.

Alright, so thereโ€™s no cork on The Whistler Double Oaked… do I just not open it or something?

On the Nose: Oak Spice & Sherry Warmth

From the first sniff, you get a lovely hit of oak spice, followed by a soft, nutty Sherry aroma. Thereโ€™s a warmth here thatโ€™s welcoming, like stepping into a cozy pub on a rainy Irish day. The Sherry influence brings a rich, slightly fruity note, balanced beautifully with that woody essence from the Bourbon casks.

The Palate: Sweet, Malty & Floral

The first sip coats your palate with salted caramel and a touch of fudge, melting into a smooth, sweet maltiness. Thanks to the high percentage of corn and grain whiskey (a whopping 80%), thereโ€™s a floral sweetness that dances lightly on the tongue. Itโ€™s not overly complex but has a charm that keeps you sipping, making it an easy, approachable pour. The mouthfeel is silky, and that caramel flavour lingers, giving way to subtle hints of dried fruit and a gentle, warming spice.

The Finish: Gentle & Mellow

The finish is soft, mellow, and pleasantly lingering, leaving a trail of sweet malt and a whisper of Sherry warmth. Itโ€™s the kind of whiskey that doesnโ€™t demand too much from you, perfect for a laid-back evening or a relaxed get-together with friends. And hey, if you fancy yourself a whistler, nowโ€™s the time to practice (or not, if youโ€™re as hopeless as I am).
